First Issue of Indian Head cents,
a design that would last for 50 years until 1909. The Indian Head cent replaced the Flying Eagle Cent.
1859
was also the year of the
Harpers Ferry Raid.
John Brown's men arrived at Harper's Ferry in Virginia in order to instigate a slave rebellion. Brown's men were attacked by soldiers under Robert E. Lee on October 18th, after which Brown and several of his men were captured.

Billy the Kid's gang being hunted down by Sheriff Pat Garrett; a year later, Billy the Kid himself was killed.

the death of notorious outlaw Jesse James.
