Description
1985 Gold Half Sovereign Coin from the Royal Mint were issued only in a limited edition, proof version. Each half sovereign weighs 3.99 grams and contains 3.6575 grams (0.1177 troy ounce) of Pure Gold! That's over 1/10 of a ounce! There were no ordinary uncirculated version issued in that year, in fact during the reign of Elizabeth II, non-proof half sovereigns were only issued in 1982, and then each year from 2000.Proofs are specially struck coins, with a highly polished mirror finished background, and the raised design in contrasting matt finish. They are issued as limited editions, and are more expensive than the ordinary uncirculated version.
1985 proof half sovereigns are contained in a plastic capsule within a Royal Mint leather covered box, and are accompanied by a certificate.
They are almost too good for use in jewelry, which would ruin their special finish in a very short space of time, but as there was no ordinary uncirculated version issued in 1985, the proof version is the only choice.
